MIA to Collins Avenue Hotels

The hotel spine of South Beach, one valet ramp after another along A1A.

from $89

Collins Avenue is where South Beach actually sleeps. The oceanfront spine of the neighborhood - technically State Road A1A - runs the full length of the beach, and its blocks between Fifteenth and Twenty-Third carry the big names: Loews Miami Beach at 1601, the SLS at 1701, The Setai at 2001, and a dozen restored Deco and MiMo properties in between. If you booked a South Beach hotel and it is not on Ocean Drive, odds are excellent it is on Collins.

Every one of those properties handles arrivals differently, which is exactly the kind of trivia a good airport driver carries around. Some have porte-cocheres directly on Collins; others tuck their entrances onto the numbered side streets to keep A1A moving; a few share valet ramps that back up fifteen cars deep at check-in time on Friday. We pull up where the bell staff actually are, so the trip ends with a cart for your bags rather than a walk around the block.

From MIA plan on about twelve miles and twenty-five to forty minutes. The default route runs the MacArthur Causeway and up Collins; when an afternoon event chokes the lower beach, the Julia Tuttle Causeway and a southbound approach down Collins is often faster for hotels above Twentieth Street. Your driver makes that call with live traffic, and your fixed fare stays fixed either way.

Sedans from the airport start at $89 including flight tracking, meet and greet at arrivals, tolls, parking and waiting time. Traveling with the whole crew for a beach week? The Business SUV takes six people and six bags for a single flat price, which beats splitting two ride-hails and hoping both find the same driveway.
